Pharmacy lecturers from Robert Gordon University (RGU) will visit Austria this summer to share best practice in community pharmacy in Scotland.
Dr Anita Weidmann and Ina Donat from RGU’s School of Pharmacy and Life Sciences will spend time at the University of Graz in early July.
During their time at in Graz, they will deliver a workshop on clinical pharmacy and patient centred pharmaceutical care planning to undergraduate pharmacy students.
Dr Weidmann, who helped facilitate a visit from an Austrian community pharmacist to RGU last year, hopes to build on existing links with the pharmacy community.
She said: “The Pharmacy profession in Austria differs considerably to that in the UK. Historically it has been a very science based degree with a focus on the formulation of medicines and their optimal delivery to biomolecular targets within the body.
“In recent years however there has been an increasing desire to move the profession towards a more patient centred care approach which helps to ensure patient safety, improve therapeutic outcomes and reduces the economic burden on the healthcare system.
“We are delighted to have been asked share our knowledge and expertise in this area to help with the education of the next generation of Austrian Pharmacists.
“This is a great example how knowledge exchange activities between two universities can grow to benefit multiple students and we have plenty more ideas of how to progress this work in the future to benefit students from both institutions.”
