Robert Gordon University (RGU) spin-out company, PlanSea, has been shortlisted in the 2017 SPE Aberdeen Offshore Achievement Awards (OAA) ‘Emerging Technology’ category.
PlanSea, which offers operational management control, fleet optimisation and vessel scheduling software for the offshore oil and gas marine support sector, has been shortlisted for its ground-breaking optimisation and efficiency software.
The software uses advanced algorithms to optimise vessel utilisation while still meeting all operational objectives and capturing all of the constraints and delays that make offshore logistics such a complex task.
It is thought that this could enable annual savings of over a hundred million pounds in the UKCS alone, where well over a hundred platform supply vessels (PSVs) operate.
Jim Cargill, PlanSea CEO and RGU lecturer, commented: “It is a great honour to have been short-listed in these prestigious Awards and is testament to the hard work and dedication of our team.
“The ability to accurately identify feasible ways in which reduced fleets can operate and validate that in realistic simulation is an offshore supply chain game changer.
“There is a tremendous opportunity for the industry to collaborate with shared PSV fleets, potentially saving 40% - 50% of resource costs, which could mean continued viability for assets that struggle to break even in the current environment.
“Looking forward to an oil price recovery, as activity rises the cost base will rise at a slower rate as efficient fleet sizing is maintained.”
The SPE Aberdeen Offshore Achievement Awards (OAA) is the biggest and longest established industry awards for the UK offshore energy sector, covering all aspects from supply to upstream operations and offshore renewables.
For over thirty years, the awards have been celebrating and encouraging innovation and collaboration in the North Sea.
The ‘Emerging Technology’ award, which PlanSea has been shortlisted for, aims to identify and recognise innovative new technology ideas developed in the UK for the offshore energy sector
Professor John McCall, PlanSea co-founder and Director of RGU’s Smart Data Technologies Centre, added: “It is immensely rewarding to see our algorithms having a positive impact on Aberdeen’s leading industry.”
