Students at Robert Gordon University (RGU) have raised £1270 for charity by taking part in a 24 hour gaming marathon.

A 28-strong group of students from RGU’s Gaming Society took part in its space themed fundraising frontier to raise cash for Friends of Roxburghe House Grampian which provides support to patients with life limiting illness.

The 24 hour marathon event, which was live streamed online from the university’s Garthdee campus, saw the students taking it in turns to sit in the hot seat, with each spending two hours playing a space themed video game to an audience of fellow gamers.

The student society decided to raise funds for the specialist palliative care unit to support one of its members whose mother was looked after by Roxburghe House.

Pharmacy student Amy McNellis (24), the president of RGU’s Gaming Society, said: “The society chose Friends of Roxburghe House to support one of our long term members whose mum was taken care of by the unit before she sadly passed away.

“He was very grateful for the help they provided so the cause was very close to his, and therefore our hearts. Our society is very close knit so to be able to do something like this for one of our good friends was amazing.

“The event was a huge success and we are delighted at the amount raised, which will help to ensure that patients with life limiting illnesses continue to get the fantastic care provided by Friends of Roxburghe House.”

The society smashed its fundraising target by 254%, raising a total of £1270 for Friends of Roxburghe House where care concentrates on symptom control for patients with life limiting illness.

The RGU Gaming Society offers a fun and inclusive community for students who share a mutual passion for games. It currently has 20 student members, as well as a number of RGU alumni, and organises a range of events and social activities throughout the year.
