Risks and opportunities of the landfill ban in the spotlight

Is your business ready for the landfill ban?

The new legislation – which comes into effect from January 1, 2021 – is designed to help transition Scotland towards a circular economy and meet the targets set out in the Zero Waste Plan by barring all commercial ‘black bag’ and general household waste from landfill.

This means that biodegradable municipal waste, such as food, garden waste, paper and cardboard, needs to be directed towards alternative treatments that can also help extract any remaining resource value from residual general waste.

One Stop Waste is helping north-east businesses prepare for the new legislation by holding a special lunch and learn session at Marischal College, as part of Aberdeen City Council’s ‘Business Boosters’ series of events.

The free-to-attend event (Risks and Rewards – The Landfill Ban) takes place on Wednesday, September 11, from 12pm until 2pm and is aimed at business owners and professionals with responsibility for environmental management.

Craig Donoghue, managing director at One Stop Waste, commented: “The clock is ticking with just over a year until this wide-reaching ban on landfill comes into force, which makes this event a perfect opportunity to educate people about the risks and opportunities this change in legislation presents.

“Delegates will benefit from invaluable advice on improving their waste management processes, making their operations as waste-free as possible and other key environmental issues.

“Here at One Stop Waste, we see it as our responsibility to make people aware of all the different recycling options available to them. Through this approach, we have helped clients significantly increase their landfill diversion rate, which currently averages at 95 %.”
