Marco Rubio has urged new Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband to increase the UK's spending on defence.
Holding their first talks in Washington, Rubio, the US Secretary of State, told Miliband that Europe should "take a greater role in its own security”, The Times reports.
The comments come after new Prime Minister Andy Burnham would not commit to spending 3% of GDP on defence by 2030, instead favouring a further off target of 3.5% by 2035.
A government source told The Times Miliband "proactively" raised the issue of defence spending during the discussions with Rubio.
Miliband has proven to be a divisive figure with the Trump administration due to his steadfast opposition of North Sea drilling.
