Scottish rugby legend John Barclay is to be guest speaker at the 2024 Dee Heroes Dinner, raising funds to support the award-winning restoration of the threatened river.

The former Scotland International Rugby Captain made over 70 appearances for his country, leading Scotland to wins over England and France in the 2018 Six Nations tournament, and he played club rugby for Glasgow Warriors from the age of 17. He went on to play for Scarlets and Edinburgh Rugby.

John Barclay said: "I am looking forward to spending the evening with supporters of the River Dee Trust, sharing some of my stories of life in the world of professional rugby and helping them to raise vital funds for their award winning nature restoration projects in such a beautiful part of Scotland. It is so important to protect our wildlife and their habitat so that it can be enjoyed by future generations”.

Trust Chair Sandy Bremner said: “Having the high profile support of John for the work of the Trust is a fabulous way for us to increase awareness of the scale of the challenges facing the Dee and engage a new audience. I for one am looking forward to meeting John and hearing his stories from on and off the field of rugby. It will be an excellent evening and, with such a well-known speaker, we are expecting a sell-out event”.

After such a successful inaugural dinner in 2023, the River Dee Trust conservation charity hopes to raise even more funds for their landscape-scale projects to restore the habitat for the iconic wild Atlantic salmon and all wildlife in the Dee catchment, increasing biodiversity and mitigating the effects of climate change.

This Black Tie/Kilt event takes place on Friday, August 23, 2024 at the Maryculter House and will include sparkling reception drinks with canapes, a delightful three course dinner, charity auction including a very special cask of whisky and a raffle.
