The energy sector has a proven track record of resilience, with its workforce showing adaptability and innovation in high-pressure environments.

However, research continues to show that people in the energy sector – particularly offshore workers – face an increased risk of poor mental health and suicide.

In a safety-critical environment, physical and mental health safety are two sides of the same coin, and both have far-reaching consequences. Poor mental health in the workplace has an impact not just on individual workers but can have a ripple effect on teams and whole organisations. And as the industry continues to face sustained challenges, its biggest asset is its people.

SAMH (Scottish Action for Mental Health) has created a bespoke solution to help protect mental health in the energy sector.

The mental health charity’s Workplace team has developed a modular training programme with input from over 60 industry professionals across 23 organisations. Shaped by and for energy workers at all levels, this training reflects the reality of working in the sector: on or offshore, in management or non-management roles. To maximise accessibility, sessions can be delivered both onshore and offshore, ensuring access in the environments where workers operate.

By building capacity in the workforce to spot warning signs, have supportive conversations, and recognise the impact of stress and burnout, organisations can help to address the emotional and psychological impacts of onshore and offshore work, including decommissioning, and support better mental health across the sector.

Training is tailored specifically to energy industry workers and focuses on key areas including:

  • mental health awareness
  • supporting others and having a conversation
  • building resilience and managing stress
  • suicide prevention.

It is grounded in compassion, respect, accident prevention, safe working and care for all workers across the sector.

Feedback from initial sessions has been extremely positive. Over 95% of participants rated the training positively, with 91% rating it extremely or very useful. One attendee said: “I would recommend every single offshore worker has this rolled out. Offshore is a difficult environment and everyone can benefit from a greater understanding of how to support [colleagues].”
