Bubbles, toothpaste, dinosaurs and lighthouses will take over Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire libraries this summer, as part of TechFest’s Eureka Series for children.
Youngsters aged between three and 12 will be given the chance to test their science and engineering skills at hands-on workshops throughout the summer holidays.
TechFest is an Aberdeen-based charity which aims to promote STEM activities to young people and the wider community.
Sponsored by Chevron, the 45-minute Eureka Series sessions will use science to help kids solve mysteries and puzzles and design and build structures.
Laura Atkinson, Policy, Government and Public Affairs advisor, Chevron Upstream Europe, said: “Our social investments in STEM engage students in their learning life, from primary schools, right through secondary schools, colleges and universities. Working with our partners, we take a holistic approach to our investments in education by getting students excited about STEM and encouraging them to pursue STEM workshops, courses, and ultimately, STEM careers. Partnering with organisations like TechFest to develop STEM programmes that are fun and engaging, arms students with the critical skills they need to succeed today and in the future.”
The workshops include Brilliant Bubbles, an investigation into bubble making; Making Toothpaste, an experiment with a top-secret toothpaste recipe; Fossil Folly, which looks at why dinosaurs come in different shapes and sizes; and K’NEX Lighthouses, which will challenge participants to design their own prototype model.
Sarah Chew, managing director of TechFest, said: “We are looking forward to getting on the road this summer and taking our fun and interactive science sessions to libraries all over Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, thanks to the support of our event sponsor, Chevron.
“Many of the workshops are CREST Award accredited so children who are working towards their national awards can collect credits for taking part and we’re excited to see what everyone will come up with!”
