Scott Direct responds to COVID-19

Scott Direct is a national distributor of workwear, PPE and safety-related products and part of the family-owned Scott Group (www.scottgroupltd.com). The business has been uniquely equipped to respond quickly and effectively to the Covid19 pandemic through the combination of its local hubs in Peterhead, Lerwick and Stirling as well as its national distribution centre in Grangemouth and its recently refurbished, protective workwear manufacturing sister company, Seahawk Apparel.

Scott Direct, supported by Seahawk’s design and manufacturing capability, is generally concerned with the manufacture and supply of specialist protective workwear and PPE for the likes of the oil and gas, petrochemical and construction sectors. Since the outbreak of Covid-19, the business has focussed its operations on supplying protective workwear and PPE to NHS staff and other key workers.

Scott Direct was quick to identify the potential to manufacture essential, frontline protective garments. With support from Scott Group’s Health and Safety team, the priority was to implement a range of protective measures within the workplace, including social distancing to ensure the wellbeing of the team of 25 experienced designers, pattern cutters and sewing machinists. This enabled manufacturing to continue safely. The team are proud to play their part as essential workers with a role in the national response to Covid19.

Inhouse expertise facilitated the adaptation of existing patterns to produce hospital scrubs as well as creating a bespoke design for a reusable hospital barrier gown. Both these items have been made available to the National Health Service across Scotland.

The production of a non-medical, re-useable barrier mask has also been very well received. Many Scott Direct customers seek to provide employees in non-clinical roles with the additional comfort of a lightweight, re-useable mask while travelling to work or within the workplace to support social distancing measures.

Rob Sayles, managing director, said: “The re-useable, washable barrier masks have been a great success. They’re helping to preserve the supply of medical masks for frontline clinical workers where PPE continues to be in short supply.”
