Aberdeen Performing Arts has launched a major search for the next big talent in theatre writing, inviting submissions for a brand new play for the 2027 Light the Blue Festival.
The arts organisation is looking for early career writers aged 18 – 35 who are either based in or have a meaningful connection to the North-East of Scotland, to create a new piece of theatre for adult audiences.
Light the Blue is Aberdeen Performing Arts’ festival for and by young people, with an annual programme featuring over 1,000 young and professional artists, school pupils and early career creatives from across Scotland.
Supported by Creative Scotland through the Expanded Festivals Fund, the new commission opportunity will see the new production open at the Lemon Tree in Aberdeen in June 2027 for a run of up to one week.
Aberdeen Performing Arts Chief Executive, Sharon Burgess, said: “Light the Blue is a perfect setting to support and draw attention to our most exciting homegrown emerging artists.
“We’re passionate about giving artists in the early stages of their career the chance to develop their skills, test out ideas and create new work for wide-ranging audiences.
“We know there are so many talented writers out there with a unique voice to bring the North-East of Scotland into focus on the stage, and we can’t wait to see what comes out of this exciting initiative.”
Light the Blue Creative Producer Jordan Blackwood said: “We are looking for early career playwrights who have a new story to tell and who are keen to develop their practice through a supportive commission process.
“Whilst we are initially looking to commission the work for production at Light the Blue 2027, we may also explore touring and future presentation opportunities beyond Aberdeen with the successful artist.
“We will support the commissioned artists to realise their work through hands-on producing, production and artistic development of the piece, working collaboratively with the selected writer to assemble the best team for the production, with a focus on engaging with those based in or with a connection to the North-east.
