All 12 Aberdeen City Council-run schools have signed up to the Electoral Commission’s #ReadytoVote schools campaign, ahead of the first Scottish Local Government Elections, in which 16 and 17-year-olds can vote.
The Local Government (Council) Elections will be held on Thursday May 4 and in Aberdeen residents registered to vote will elect ward members to Aberdeen City Council. There are 13 multi-member wards in Aberdeen with a total of 45 councillors.
Anyone who is 16 or over on Thursday May 4 will be able to vote, but they need to register first.
The #ReadyToVote campaign aims to let young people know that their opinion matters; their voice should be heard; and registering and voting will help them to shape the future of their community.
To help pupils who will be old enough to vote schools have been invited by the Electoral Commission to hold registration events today – Wednesday March 1 –#ReadyToVote Day – and throughout the coming weeks.
Anyone who is not already on the electoral roll must register to vote by midnight on Monday April 17 to vote in the Scottish Local Government elections on Thursday May 4.
