The work of a charity which provides high quality one to one literacy tuition for children and young people who struggle to learn to read, write, speak and listen is being supported by a donation from the Aberdeen Charitable Foundation.

The Children’s Literacy Charity, which was originally founded in Peckham, provides high quality literacy interventions for children of all ages including those from disadvantaged backgrounds. The Children’s Literacy Charity has received a donation of £4,500 from the Foundation towards supporting children in Southwark.

The children involved will have a literacy level at least 24 months behind age-related expectations and will be at risk of being left behind educationally as they struggle to access the opportunities available through the national curriculum. They may be unable to take part in classroom-based activities and may lose confidence due to their lack of literacy skills. Some may disengage with the education system altogether.

Claire Drummond, head of charitable giving at Aberdeen Charitable Foundation said: “Many of the children assisted by The Children’s Literacy Charity come from socioeconomically deprived areas and some have parents with poor literacy levels. We are delighted to support the work of The Children’s Literacy Charity to provide life changing literacy interventions and to raise the aspirations of the young people they work with.”

Tom Hill, Trusts and Foundations Fundraiser at The Children’s Literacy Charity said: “Our vision is to see all underachieving children recognising their value and achieving their true potential. We do this through providing individualised early intervention literacy teaching and by building skills and confidence through an affirming relationship between tutor and child. This donation from Aberdeen Charitable Foundation will enable us to help more children facing literacy challenges in the Southwark area.”
