Aberdeen-based Spectis Robotics has appointed Mostyn Farquhar as electronic engineer, strengthening the company's research and development capability as it continues to expand its work in robotics, autonomous systems and emerging technologies
Mostyn joins the business with a multidisciplinary engineering background spanning electronics, robotics and artificial intelligence. Originally from Aberdeen, he began his studies at the University of St Andrews, gaining an associate degree in chemistry with physics, before completing a BEng in electrical and electronic engineering at the University of Strathclyde. He is currently finishing an MSc in robotics and artificial intelligence at the University of Aberdeen.
In his new role, Mostyn will support research and development activities across the company. His responsibilities will include electronics design, embedded systems, programming, artificial intelligence, prototyping and testing, alongside contributing to the development of new products and technologies.
The opportunity to work across a variety of projects attracted Mostyn to Spectis Robotics. Having already gained experience working on projects within the business, he welcomed the chance to become involved in solving practical engineering challenges from concept through to testing and implementation.
Mostyn brings experience in electronics, embedded systems, robotics, computer vision and artificial intelligence. His academic work has included developing a piezoelectric sensing system capable of measuring hydrogen-enriched natural gas within pipe systems, as well as designing and building an autonomous rover that uses machine learning and computer vision to navigate, avoid obstacles and locate a destination.
The appointment supports Spectis Robotics' continued investment in technical innovation across the industries it serves, including marine science, energy, utilities, emergency services and civil infrastructure.
Mostyn Farquhar, electronic engineer at Spectis Robotics, said: "I'm really looking forward to joining Spectis Robotics full-time. I'm excited to get properly stuck in, keep learning and contribute my own ideas as I develop within the company."
He added: "Underwater robotics and inspection are areas that particularly interest me because of the engineering challenges involved. I'm interested in how AI, computer vision and autonomous systems could be integrated into these technologies as they continue to develop."
Outside work, Mostyn enjoys building and developing cars, spending time in the gym and exploring the outdoors. He also supports activities with the robotics society at the University of St Andrews and is a second-degree black belt in martial arts.
