SSEN Transmission has launched the invitation to tender for the northern converter civil works on the proposed Eastern Green Link 3 (EGL3) HVDC connection project - a major milestone in securing the supply chain for one of the UK’s most ambitious electricity transmission developments.

EGL3 is a joint venture between SSEN Transmission and National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET), designed to deliver a 2GW, 525kV HVDC link between Peterhead in Aberdeenshire and the Norfolk area. Spanning approximately 680km of buried onshore and subsea cable, it will enable the efficient transmission of high volumes of renewable energy between Scotland and England for onward distribution.

The civil works will cover key infrastructure for the proposed converter station site at Netherton Hub in Peterhead including HVDC buildings, access roads, drainage, fencing, and other associated construction activities.

This package is critical to preparing the converter station area for the installation of HVDC technology and ensuring the project remains on track for delivery by 2033.

The package marks the final component to be tendered for the northern elements of this major HVDC transmission link.

David Kerr, SSEN Transmission’s EGL 3 lead project manager, said: “We’re pleased to commence the tendering process for the northern converter civil works on EGL3, marking another important step in securing the supply chain for this nationally significant infrastructure project.

“EGL3 will play a vital role in unlocking Scotland’s renewable energy potential and delivering clean power to homes and businesses across the UK.  Early engagement with potential contractors will help ensure we’re ready to deliver this project on time, safely and to the highest standards.

“We look forward to working with experienced contractors who share our commitment to sustainability, safety and collaborative delivery.”

EGL 3 forms part of SSEN Transmission’s ambitious Pathway to 2030 programme - a major programme of electricity transmission projects that are part of the business’s plans to invest at least £22bn in the coming years.

This investment will see the construction of new substations, subsea and underground cables and overhead lines across the north of Scotland. The programme will unlock Scotland’s homegrown, clean power potential, and deliver the infrastructure needed to meet national energy security and clean power targets, all while bringing jobs and local benefits to the community.
