Sir Keir Starmer has told MPs the UK's decision to recognise a Palestinian statehood helped bring the ceasefire deal to Gaza.

The prime minister told MPs that the formal recognition last month “helped lead to the historic New York Declaration” which saw Hamas end its rule in Gaza.

Addressing the commons, he said: “We’ve worked behind the scenes for months with the US, Arab and European nations to help deliver a ceasefire, get the hostages out, get aid in and secure a better future for Israel, Gaza and the West Bank.

“I am proud of our contribution and we are in a position to play this role precisely because of the approach this Government takes.”

Sir Keir made the statement after returning from Egypt to attend the Gaza peace summit with Donald Trump and other world leaders.

Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch said said that she was “surprised” by the prime minister’s description of the recognition of Palestine as a “contribution to this peace deal”.
