Construction of the new Hazlehead Academy Campus has reached a major milestone, with steel now being erected on site as work progresses on one of Aberdeen City Council’s largest school estate projects.
Around 80 truckloads of steel are due to be delivered to the site as work continues on the new £124 million campus, which began construction in March 2026. The new facility is being built on the playing fields of the existing school, allowing Hazlehead Academy to remain fully operational throughout the construction period.
The new Hazlehead Academy Campus is scheduled to be operational in August 2028, with the demolition of the existing school buildings and completion of external sporting facilities expected by summer 2029.
Councillor Martin Greig, convener of the Education and Children's Services Committee, said: “Seeing the steel framework progressing is an exciting milestone and allows people to appreciate the scale of the new Hazlehead Academy Campus taking shape. This significant investment in our school estate will create a modern, high-quality learning environment where future generations of young people can thrive, supporting learning, achievement and wellbeing.”
Councillor Lee Fairfull, vice-convener of the Education and Children’s Services Committee, said: “The new campus will transform educational provision for pupils across the area and create outstanding opportunities for learning, sport and community use. It is fantastic to see construction progressing so well and we look forward to watching the project continue to develop.”

When complete, the campus will have capacity for up to 1,600 pupils and will feature two full-size all-weather pitches and an athletics sprint track. It will also serve an expanded catchment area including Hazlehead, Countesswells and Kingswells communities.
The project is being delivered by Aberdeen City Council’s development partner, hub North Scotland, with construction work undertaken by Robertson Construction Group.
Hazlehead Academy Campus is the first project to begin construction as part of the North Schools Programme, a pioneering hub North Scotland initiative that brings together five local authorities to deliver a new generation of school buildings across the north of Scotland.
The project has also received £100,000 from sportscotland’s Sport Facilities Fund, supported by National Lottery funding, towards the development of the athletics sprint track, which will benefit pupils, local clubs and the wider community.
