Aberdeen & Northern Marts, part of ANM Group – one of Scotland’s leading farming, food and finance businesses – is pleased to report strong trade at the anniversary show and sale of store cattle, which took place on Monday, September 3, 2018 at the Caithness Livestock Centre.
The show and sale – sponsored by Harbro and W & A Geddes Ltd – was judged by Andrew Ingram, East Comalegy, Drumblade, Huntly, who awarded the overall champion title to a 17-month-old Limousin cross heifer, weighing 494kg, from Beth Douglas, House Park, Bower. The champion animal sold to Mr Ingram for £1,720.
The reserve champion was a 533kg Limousin cross heifer from A W Campbell, Bullenie, Harpsdale, which sold for £2,000 to a local buyer.
Stuart Slesser, centre manager at the Caithness Livestock Centre, said: “We had a good show of cattle as always at the anniversary show and sale, with a much-improved trade from the earlier summer sales. It was pleasing to see sellers taking home similar returns to this time last year.
“I am also delighted that the sale averages were 209.7 pence per kg for heifers and 217.9 pence per kg for steers.”
Ian Gunn, a notable consigner from Murza Farm, Bower, Wick, said: “Cattle have summered well in Caithness and the trade today was ahead of expectations. We appreciate the challenges of the fodder situation that the finishers are facing, and it was pleasing to see a good ringside of buyers from Aberdeenshire and further South supporting our sale.”
