STV has hailed the launch of its new national radio station as a success - but has so far captured just 1.7% of all radio listening across Scotland in its first official audience figures.

The broadcaster said STV Radio had attracted 139,000 weekly listeners and generated 1.3 million hours of listening during its first six months on air, making it "one of the top ten most-listened-to commercial radio stations in Scotland".

The broadcaster said listeners spend an average of 9.3 hours a week with the station, with 84% of its audience aged over 35.

According to the latest RAJAR figures, the station secured a 1.7% share of all radio listening across its Total Survey Area – Scotland – during the quarter. While not a commercial radio competitor, BBC Radio Scotland's listening share, at 5.7% was more than three times larger.

The STV Radio launch has not been without controversy after the broadcaster faced criticism over its decision to axe its dedicated North news programme, replacing it with a single nationwide news service.

Graham Bryce, managing director of STV Radio, said: "As a new entrant, STV Radio has quickly established itself in the market and these first official figures are well ahead of our expectations.

"In just six months, we've built a meaningful audience by offering something genuinely different for Scottish listeners - a strong mix of great music, personality-led programming, entertainment, sport and a distinctly Scottish perspective."

He added: "To attract around 139,000 weekly listeners and deliver 1.3 million hours of listening in our first months on air is an incredible result. What's particularly encouraging is the depth of listening we're seeing.

"Audiences aren't just sampling STV Radio - they're spending time with us and making us part of their daily routine, spending over 9 hours per week. That tells us we're not just attracting audiences; we're building loyalty."
