Creating and growing links between international energy hubs was the focus of a one-day event which took place in Aberdeen on Tuesday, December 5.
Building on the success of its inaugural year in 2016, the Aberdeen-Perth WA Gateway returned to Macdonald Norwood Hall to provide a platform for international networking, knowledge sharing and discussion. The event was managed by Business Plus Scotland and emulated the success of the now well-established annual Aberdeen-Houston Gateway and Aberdeen-Norway Gateway events.
Chaired by Helen Tulloch of Energy Networks (UK) Ltd, it was again held in association with the Australasian Oil & Gas Exhibition and Conference, and The Government of Western Australia. European Office Agent General, John Atkins headed an impressive line-up of speakers and messages including:
- Aberdeenshire Council
- Aberdeen City Council
- Matt Thomas, ASCO
- Guy Bromby, ThinJack Ltd
- Sally Cassidy, Traveleads Travel Management
- David Blades, Qantas Airways Ltd
- Bill Hare, Australasian Oil & Gas Exhibition and Conference
- Jemma Green, Deputy Lord Major of Perth, WA
- Ewan Robertson, ICR Integrity Limited
Keynote speaker John Atkins commented: “Events such as this are important in enhancing inter-hemisphere appreciation and understanding. The challenges facing the UK oil industry are similar to those we have experienced in some of our resources industries, so we can learn from each other.
“Current and prospective developments in offshore Western Australia mean there is a need to access knowledge and expertise. This is a great opportunity for knowledge sharing and industry development with and from Aberdeen. There are already many strong links between us. I am very confident that we can continue to build on the success to date for the benefit of industry in both Western Australia and Aberdeen.”
He added: “The Aberdeen-Perth WA Gateway got off to a great start last year and this year’s event has taken the next step up.”
Bill Hare said: “We are delighted with the great success of the second Aberdeen-Perth WA Gateway event and the tremendous relationship that continues between these two, great oil and gas cities. For more than 30 years Aberdeen companies have been coming to Perth to participate in the annual AOG Exhibition and Conference. Scottish companies have been a very important part of our event since its inception, as they will be in 2018, and we look forward to seeing our Scottish friends in Perth again next March.”
Matt Thomas said: “The event was a wonderful opportunity to showcase ASCO’s entry into the Australian market, using Perth as the gateway. Our clients are particularly interested to know that our Australian operations can leverage off the UK parent company to provide the service that they are looking for. The similarities between Aberdeen and Perth are not insignificant, with a wealth of knowledge in Australia learned and acquired in the North Sea.
Commenting on the success of the second Aberdeen-Perth WA Gateway event creator and Granite PR founder/managing director Brett Jackson said: “Aberdeen and Perth are both founding members of the World Energy Cities Partnership (WECP) and both are globally recognised as international energy capitals.
“The synergies which exist between these locations offer an exciting opportunity to explore in-depth the opportunities which exist for those seeking to broaden their corporate horizons. We are delighted at how well this event has been received and hope that delegates left with an exciting insight into the many possibilities which exist for those ready to expand their corporate horizons.”
The Aberdeen-Perth WA Gateway 2017 was supported by Aberdeen City Council, Aberdeenshire Council, ASCO, Australasian Oil & Gas Exhibition and Conference, Business Angus, City of Perth WA, Energy Voice, ICR Integrity Limited, Macdonald Hotels & Resorts, Press & Journal, Qantas Airways Ltd, Scottish Development International, The Government of Western Australia, ThinJack Ltd, Traveleads Travel Management.
