Successful Thainstone collective sale sees strong demand for tractors and heavy plant

Thainstone Centre attracted more than 2,000 attendees last weekend for the second Saturday collective sale of the year, with the top-priced items at the auction emerging from the tractor and plant class.

Mark Barrack, Head of Thainstone Specialist Auctions, said: “We had a fantastic turnout of buyers, sellers and spectators who attended the sale despite the wet weather that persisted throughout the day. Strong prices were achieved yet again across all classes of equipment – particularly for tractors and plant, heavy commercials and light commercials and 4x4s. Demand remains stable and strong as there is a consistent desire among buyers to purchase high-quality used equipment and machinery, and we are confident that these auctions held early in the year will set a fantastic precedent for the success of the collective sales in the months to come.

“This sale saw a notable increase in online bidding via our online platform, iBidder, as this platform is globally advertised, easy to use and a great alternative for participating in the sale for those who can’t attend on the day in person. Throughout this sale, 84 bidders hailing from the UK and Ireland, as well as the Czech Republic and South Africa were registered online. This trend is a reflection of the confidence buyers have in our online bidding system and the growing importance that technology plays in large, multifaceted sales of this nature.”

Of the 2,352 lots available for purchase, 1,920 items were successfully sold at auction, resulting in an 82% sale conversion rate. The top selling item was a 2007 John Deere 6930 premium tractor in the tractor and plant class, which realised £26,500.

Also in the tractor and plant class was the second highest-selling item – a 2011 Doosan DX80 8T excavator which sold for £21,000. A 2016 Nifty lift 120 cherry picker achieved £20,000 at auction, followed by a 2010 Doosan DX140LC 14T excavator that sold for £19,000.

The light commercials and 4x4s section saw a 2003 Land Rover Defender 90 Td5 claim the top price, selling for £7,800. Achieving the next highest selling price in this class was a 2012 Ford Transit Custom 270 eco-tech, which achieved £6,900. Other notable prices include £5,800 for a 2012 Mitsubishi ASX di-d 4x4, and £5,700 for a 2014 Volkswagen Caddy C20 TDI Startline.

A Mac step-frame trailer was the highest-selling item in the trailers, caravans and containers class, achieving £12,200. The second highest selling items were a Montracon curtainside trailer and a Bailey Pegasus 514 caravan, both of which sold for £5,000, followed by a Fruehauf tri-axle trailer which realised £4,600.

In the farm machinery and equipment section, the top-selling item was an ECE rear discharge muckspreader, which realised £6,400, followed by an Accord KV 4m drill that sold for £5,000. Other top-selling items include a KV 5 fur plough which realised £4,750, and Dowdeswell 6 furrow rev plough which achieved £4,200.

The live and online event, headed up by the Thainstone Specialist Auctions and Aberdeen & Northern Marts team, is held eight times per year at Thainstone Centre, Scotland’s premier auction centre. The sale is regularly well-attended by both on-site and online buyers and sellers, with buyers across Europe making substantial purchases through the sale’s online system.

The next plant, machinery and equipment sale is scheduled for Saturday, April 14, 2018 from 9am at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie. Consignors are encouraged to submit their entries as soon as possible to receive maximum exposure to potential buyers.
