Comic book and movie fans of all ages will have the chance to discover how realistic some of world’s favourite movies and characters are when it comes to stunts, ability and superpowers.

The annual TechFest festival will bring two fun and engaging presentations to the North-east, highlighting the science behind the nation’s most loved and impressive action scenes.

Supported by joint principal sponsors BP and Shell, the North-east’s annual festival of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), will run until September 28 with families encouraged to test their science and engineering skills at hands-on workshops.

Hollywood Science (September 24), presented by Dr Jonathan Hare from the University of Sussex, will examine some of most iconic action films.

Analysing movies such as SPEED, Jason Bourne, The Score, Angels and Demons and much more, this presentation - based on the BBC/OU TV series Hollywood Science - is a fascinating event for any movie fanatic.

For those with a strong interest in the abnormal, find out how feasible superpowers really are in Superhero Science (September 25).

Presented by Dr Matt Pritchard, visitors will have the chance to explore the science behind invisibility, super strength, mind control and levitation. This engaging discussion will dive into the possibility of superpowers being fact or fiction

Both events will be held at the University of Aberdeen’s Fraser Noble Building.

Sarah Chew, managing director at TechFest said: “These presentations are extremely current in today’s society. With many young people taking a large interest in film, media and being a fan of fantasy action films, both talks will offer an educational insight to the world of Hollywood.

“We’re thrilled to have such brilliant presenters attend this year’s festival, offering events for those who are typically interested in the arts, and showing how STEM is everywhere, even in the creative industry.”

TechFest is an Aberdeen-based charity which aims to promote STEM activities to young people and the wider community.

The public programme, sponsored by Equinor, features a theme of Made in Aberdeen. The festival is expected to attract thousands of visitors from across Aberdeen City and Shire.
