A new fund aimed at supporting council tenants through financial difficulty has delivered significant positive outcomes in its pilot year.
The Rent Assistance Fund, launched on 1 April 2024, aims to assist Council tenants who may be facing financial hardship and through no fault of their own may be struggling to pay their rent.
Convener of the Communities, Housing and Public Protection Committee Councillor Miranda Radley said: “We are committed to supporting our tenants, especially during challenging times.
“The success of this fund in its pilot year has allowed us to provide essential support and we hope that we can continue to build on this.”
Vice-convener Councillor Dell Henrickson said: “This fund has made a real difference for our tenants, offering a vital lifeline during difficult times and giving them the support they need.”
Between 1 April 2024 and 31 March 2025, the Fund has provided assistance to over 498 households, with 91% of these remaining clear of new rent arrears and reducing the risks of eviction and housing instability.
The Fund has also played a crucial role in residents’ wellbeing, with many reporting reduced stress and anxiety due to improved financial stability. In addition, the initiative has unlocked £379,000 in previously unclaimed welfare entitlements, further boosting household incomes and resilience.
