The Gordon Highlanders Museum will host its first ‘relaxed’ opening this summer in partnership with Me Too! when they open their doors especially for visitors with additional support needs, well as their siblings, families and carers.

Local charity Me Too! and The Gordon Highlanders Museum are holding a relaxed opening of the museum tailored to visitors with additional support needs and their families and carers.

On Monday, July 23, visitors will be able to explore the display areas in a calm, relaxed atmosphere, take part in some additional craft activities and check out some of the Museum Handling Collection up close if they like. Also available will be the Bydandy comic and Bydandy trail, which visitors can fill out at their own pace during their visit.
Phionna McInnes, Me Too! chief executive says:

“I am delighted to be working in partnership with Gordon Highlanders Museum and their commitment to make their facilities accessible to people with additional support needs who may struggle to access the facilities due to sensory considerations or understanding from others. This not only gives an opportunity to local participants but also gives a clear message to tourists that the museum is making effort to be accessible to a wider community”

Ruth Duncan, Gordon Highlanders Museum Curator says: “As a lively museum with lots going on, we know that sometimes this can be challenging for visitors with additional support needs. We are committed to removing barriers to accessing the museum and hope we can encourage more visitors who perhaps wouldn’t normally consider coming to the museum to pop in and learn about the history of The Gordon Highlanders.”

Lewis Gibbon, Gordon Highlanders Museum learning officer says "We are thrilled to be working in partnership with Me Too! on our first “relaxed day” here at the museum. The Gordon Highlanders Museum work hard to promote learning about the history and heritage of the Gordons through our exhibitions, events and popular schools programme. We are keen to make the museum appealing and accessible to potential visitors who maybe have not come to see the museum and this event will be a great way to do that. I hope this is a stepping-stone for more future collaborations with this fantastic charity."
