Duthie Park was taken over by festive chaos this weekend as an unexpected visitor brought laughter, high-fives and Christmas cheer to junior parkrun — proving that community spirit can be found in the most unusual places.

What began as a normal Sunday morning quickly turned into a scene of smiles and celebration when The Grinch appeared among the junior runners, delivering encouragement, knee-height high-fives and plenty of laughs.

Parents, volunteers and young participants were treated to a reminder that running isn’t about pace or personal bests — it’s about confidence, kindness and joy.

“Junior parkrun is basically weaponised happiness,” joked the Grinch, who was visibly affected by the overwhelming positivity. “My heart may have grown again… against my will.”

The festive appearance is part of the ongoing Miles of Smiles charity challenge, a 78-week running journey supporting SAMH and Clan Cancer Support. Since June 2025, the challenge has already achieved:

  • 1,850 kilometres completed
  • £2,720+ raised
  • 155 cold showers
  • 39 cold water dips

Behind the costumes and comedy lies a serious purpose — encouraging open conversations around mental health, supporting those affected by cancer, and showing that movement can be a powerful force for good.

Duthie junior parkrun volunteers were praised for welcoming the festive fun and creating an environment where children learn that being active can be joyful, inclusive and confidence-building.

As December continues, the Grinch has confirmed he’ll be back causing more festive mischief — but only the good kind.

Week 28 completed.

Week 29 incoming.

More miles. More smiles. More heart growth.

Sometimes, it turns out, a grumpy green runner is exactly what a community needs.
