The James Hutton Institute, an internationally renowned research centre dedicated to addressing the challenges posed by the climate and nature crises, is delighted to announce that it has been accredited a Champion Employer in Stonewall’s Proud Employers Accreditation Scheme.

Achieving Champion status is a clear signal of the importance the Hutton places on inclusion and equality. The recognition reflects the organisation’s consistent progress in fostering an inclusive workplace and demonstrates how it is influencing others through leading by example.

The Hutton’s Deputy Chief Executive and Chair of its Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Committee, Professor Deb Roberts, said, The James Hutton Institute is determined to foster a work environment in which everyone is included, respected, and empowered to fulfil their potential, whatever their identity.

“We believe that supporting people of all characteristics is in the best interests of the Hutton, and of its colleagues and students.  Achieving this accreditation shows we are making progress but is also useful in showing where we can do more to support our LGBTQ+ community.”

Thomas Adams, a researcher and Senior Champion for the Hutton’s LGBTQ+ network, highlighted the significance of the achievement: “To achieve Champion status, the Hutton had to demonstrate consistent success in influencing and show that our actions are taking root and having a growing impact.”

This accreditation acknowledges the commitment of all staff and the wider Hutton community, who continue to champion equality, respect and a strong sense of belonging throughout the institute.

The Hutton performed particularly strongly in the areas of leadership and its commitment to employee network groups. Stonewall praised its visible support for LGBTQ+ inclusion, including a strong external message communicated through its website and a clear demonstration of support for both staff and service users. Key LGBTQ+ dates and events are regularly highlighted through communications channels, helping to maintain awareness and engagement across the organisation.

The Hutton’s policies also reflect its dedication to inclusion, incorporating inclusive language and ensuring that LGBTQ+ voices are heard and represented. Together, these efforts underpin a culture where equality, diversity and inclusion are embedded at every level.

The Hutton remains committed to building on this progress, continuing to champion an inclusive environment where all individuals can thrive.
