Families in Aberdeen can build and launch their own rockets, step inside the solar system in virtual reality (VR) and race to spoil a witch's potion this October as Aberdeen Science Centre launches its autumn programme.

At the centre of the programme is Cosmic Adventures, the space-themed programme, sponsored by Space Solutions, one of the UK's leading workplace design, consultancy and facilities management companies.

Running throughout this month, it invites visitors to learn more about space travel and the technology that helps us understand the universe.

In the Rocket Lab workshop, visitors explore what it takes to leave Earth through a series of experiments including building and launching paper rockets, discovering how electrolysis works and watching the Genie in a Bottle experiment.

Science on the Spot activities offer a cosmic mix of quick-fire discovery. Visitors can see the hidden world of heat through an infrared camera, uncover the surprising science of space nappies, explore light and colour with a spectroscopy kit, experience the scale of the Solar System and find out how protection tiles keep spacecraft safe in extreme conditions.

Young explorers are catered for too with a dedicated under-6's session combining a reading of Penguinaut with a cardboard tube rocket craft. This introduces children to space through storytelling, and imaginative play.

For visitors over 7, a new Wonders of Space VR experience allows them to explore what it's like to be an astronaut through a close-up encounter with the planets. Drop-in sessions run on weekends and holidays throughout October, with the VR headsets sponsored by Mermaid Subsea and Energy Transition Zone (ETZ).

Avery Collins, public programme coordinator at Aberdeen Science Centre, said: "October is one of our favourite months here at The Science Centre and this year we've created a programme for all ages that encourages hands on experiences with the real science behind space travel, whether that's launching a rocket or learning about space nappies.  As Halloween arrives, we couldn't celebrate without a party and the addition of some spookier science.

We want all our visitor to leave having had a fun experience and asking a few more questions about the world around them, and the universe. We're grateful to Space Solutions, Mermaid Subsea and ETZ for helping us make it happen."

All Cosmic Adventures activities, including the VR experience, are included part of the standard entry price to Aberdeen Science Centre.

As Halloween gets closer, the centre takes a spooky turn with a Halloween escape room, running from Saturday, October 10 to Sunday, November 1. This challenges teams to solve puzzles and riddles, track down the witch's potion and spoil it within 45 minutes.

Sessions cost £25 for a group of six people and are suitable for ages six and over. There must be one adult in each group.

The month ends with a Halloween Party on Friday, October 30, from 4.30pm to 7.30pm.

Each guest receives a Halloween passport which is stamped as they move between a Spooky Science Show, Slime Lab, craft station, party games, scavenger hunt and virtual reality experience, which can be explored at their own pace.

Tickets cost £18 per child, with two adults attending free, and the party is suitable for ages five and over. Costumes are encouraged but not essential, and there are prizes for all.
