Incinerator closes for second time in six months

Aberdeen's £150million incinerator has closed for the second time in six months, with an interim operator put in place.

No exact timescale has been given for when the facility - which is used by Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire and Moray councils for non-recyclable waste - will reopen.

Former operator Energy From Waste (EfW) Ness has said it intends to take legal action after its contract to run the site was terminated by Aberdeen City Council last week.

Chief executive resigns from social care charity

The chief executive of an Aberdeen social care charity has resigned, weeks after warning services were becoming "unsustainable".

Sue Freeth had joined Voluntary Service Aberdeen (VSA) in 2023 which provides services for more than 2,000 vulnerable children and adults.

In October, VSA had appealed for its biggest ever level of support from the community in the organisation's 155-year history. It later announced it was seeking voluntary redundancies.

Police warn mental health call-outs are 'unsustainable'

Senior officers at Police Scotland say the force remains under unsustainable pressure from mental health incidents, despite a slight reduction in the impact on its frontline.

According to figures released by the force, response teams are attending 14,500 mental health incidents a month, a 6% reduction on two years ago.

It says it is still filling gaps left by other parts of the system and the demand on the service remains "way beyond where policing should be."

The Oscars to leave ABC and stream on YouTube starting in 2029

The Academy Awards will begin streaming exclusively on YouTube in 2029, the latest big change in Hollywood.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences made the announcement on Wednesday, saying that it signed a multi-year deal that will give YouTube the exclusive global rights to the Oscars until 2033.

The Oscars, which is planned for 15 March, has aired for a half a century on ABC. Starting in 2029, the show will be available live and for free on YouTube.

Paddy Power Betfair must pay £2m for problem gambling failings

Paddy Power Betfair has agreed to pay a £2million penalty after the industry watchdog found it failed to step in quickly enough when customers deposited large sums of money.

The Gambling Commission said a compliance assessment last year uncovered social responsibility failures at Paddy Power Betfair, whose customer interactions “fell far short of what is required”.

In one case, Paddy Power Betfair, which is owned by Flutter Entertainment, the world’s largest online betting company, failed to intervene despite a customer staking £86,000 over a 16-day period — where they ultimately lost £6,000 — and completed a manual review only when the losses escalated.
