Beechgrove Garden presenter Jim McColl dies aged 89
Beechgrove Garden presenter Jim McColl has died at the age of 89, it has been announced.
He hosted the BBC Scotland's gardening programme since it began in 1978, retiring after 41 years on screen in 2019.
Hugely popular with fellow gardeners across Scotland, he described the pastime as "part of the fabric of our lives".

Sale and supply of single-use vapes to be banned
The government is to ban the sale and supply of single-use vapes by next summer.
Legislation to introduce the ban from 1 June next year has been laid out in parliament, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) confirmed.
Businesses will have until the deadline "to sell any remaining stock they hold and prepare for the ban coming into force", it said.
Peterhead pub could be forced to close early after 10 violent incidents
A popular Peterhead pub could have its hours cut after 10 “violent incidents” within the space of a year.
The North-east’s top cop is taking aim at The Caley Bar and its accompanying Bar 57, better known as Cube.
In papers going before Aberdeenshire Council’s licensing committee, Chief Superintendent Graeme Mackie lists a catalogue of injuries punters have suffered in boozy altercations.
They include one attack that resulted in a broken leg, and another this year where a customer was left bleeding heavily after being “struck” in the neck with a broken glass.

UK could see 'end of clubbing' with 10 venues closing a month
Without urgent intervention the UK looks set to see "the end of a clubbing era that has defined generations", according to industry experts.
Ahead of next week's autumn budget, Michael Kill, the chief executive of the Nighttime Industries Association (NTIA), has spoken to Sky News about the urgent need for government support to protect a "vital part of the UK's social fabric".
New research by the NTIA shows that in the past four years the UK has lost 37% of its clubs, which works out at about 10 clubs closing each month.

Workers could get right to strike for a year
The government is considering giving workers twice as long to strike.
Under existing legislation, if workers vote to take industrial action, the mandate expires after six months and unions are required to hold another ballot to extend it.
But a consultation document produced by the government said the mandate could be extended to a year.
Starmer’s top aides dragged into diplomatic row with Trump
Senior aides to Sir Keir Starmer have been drawn into a row with Donald Trump over claims the Labour Party broke US electoral law by advising Kamala Harris’s campaign.
The Telegraph can reveal that John Lehal and David Evans, two of the party’s most senior officials, were given VIP access to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in August and met with Democrat party staff.
Morgan McSweeney, Sir Keir’s Downing Street chief of staff, also attended the convention, where Kamala Harris was crowned as the Democrats’ presidential nominee.
