Cowboys, cowgirls and runners of all abilities have only four weeks left to sign up for the Dandara 5k and family fun day which supports the rejuvenation of Aberdeen’s much-loved Hazlehead Park.
The popular event has limited spaces available for the Dandara 5k, 1k and 2k children's races and 600m fun run at Hazlehead Park on Saturday, September 9, 2017.
This year the event will take on a Wild West theme with organisers Friends of Hazlehead and Sport Aberdeen encouraging runners to don their Stetsons and cowboy shirts for the running festival.
Money raised in previous years has contributed to funding the creation of memory paths, the replanting of the Queen Mother Rose Garden, the restoration of the fountain and the revamp of Pets’ Corner, which recently welcomed a new pygmy goat, two turkeys and pair of Meerkats.
Donald Shaw, chairman of the Friends of Hazlehead, said: “Hazlehead Park is a treasured place for many people in the city and it’s important we do all we can to maintain it so it can be enjoyed by people of all ages for years to come.
“The Dandara 5k is our biggest fundraiser of the year so we’re hoping to see lots of runners enjoying the fantastic surroundings, while supporting the ongoing improvement of what we believe to be the best outdoor space in Aberdeen.
“We’d like to thank Dandara for their continued support and to Sport Aberdeen for helping us to prepare for the event itself. We are looking forward to what will surely be another fantastic day out at the park on Saturday, September 9.”
Dandara’s head of sales, Peter Best, said: “Dandara has been supporting this fantastic event since its creation and every year we enjoy taking part with our colleagues, families and friends from across the city.
“Hazlehead Park is a truly idyllic spot, and the event really is a great day out for all the family. We’re looking forward to seeing runners of all ages and abilities at the park in a few weeks’ time.”
Online registration is open until Monday September 4, 2017 – or runners can sign up and pay at the registration area on Saturday 9th September, when the first races start from 9.30am.
The event will continue into the afternoon with catering and entertainment available for all the family including performances from Bon Accord Brass Band, face painting and a bouncy castle.
The first female and male winners of the 5k will be awarded a £100 voucher for the Running Shop, with second and third place receiving trophies. The top three male and female runners in the children’s 1k and 2k races; and first boy and girl to complete the fun run will be presented with trophies.
