Top prices achieved at Thainstone’s plant

Thainstone hosted its seventh collective machinery sale of the year on Saturday 21st September, which saw more than 2,000 buyers and sellers in attendance at Thainstone Centre. The auction featured an entry of more than 2,500 items and achieved a strong sales rate of 80%.

Mark Barrack, head of Thainstone Specialist Auctions, said: “The sale saw consistent trade across all categories, and we are pleased with the results achieved. This year’s current top price of £85,000 was realised by a 2014 Caterpillar D6T LGP bulldozer and there was a good mix of buyers in attendance bidding on a range of good quality plant, machinery and equipment.

“At the moment, we are seeing businesses cashing their used equipment and purchasing newer machinery before the anticipated price rise and new trade tariffs after the Brexit deadline of October 31. There was certainly a strong demand for tractors and diggers on the day, and more could have been sold to sellers’ advantage. Quality JCB 3CXs are currently commanding premium prices at auction.

“The vehicle section is proving popular among online bidders and we have regular customers from across the country participating in our online auctions looking for their next vehicle. We also had a fleet of more than 50 local authority vehicles go up for sale.

“Vintage tractors sold very well to a spectrum of young and more experienced collectors with a strong price of £4,800 realised by a 1959 David Brown 950. There is always a good market demand for collectables.

“The final sale of the year takes place on Saturday 9th November and those interested in realising their assets are invited to get in touch with our team well-ahead of time.”

The top price of £85,000 came from a 2014 Caterpillar D6T LGP bulldozer in the tractor and plant section, followed closely by £80,000 for a 2016 Caterpillar 972M loading shovel. The light commercial and 4x4s category saw a 2015 Ford Transit achieve £11,200 and a steel portal building frame sell for £11,300. The trailers, containers and caravans category was topped by a £7,200 Broshuis stepframe low loader, and a 2009 MAN TGM 18.240 4x2 tipper went for £7,000 in the heavy commercials section. The implements category saw a Bunning lowlander 105 muck spreader sell for £6,500 and the small agri section a had Glendale portable hyd sheep shedder and gates achieve £3,000.

The live and online event is hosted eight times per year at Thainstone Centre, Scotland’s premier auction centre. The sale is well-attended by both on-site and online buyers and sellers, with buyers from across UK, Ireland and Northern Ireland making substantial purchases through the sale’s online platform.

The next plant, machinery and equipment sale is scheduled for Saturday 9th November 2019 from 9am at Thainstone. Consignors are encouraged to submit their entries as soon as possible to receive maximum exposure to potential buyers.
