Toy shop giant The Entertainer is set to open its first Aberdeen store in Union Square, with its chief executive lavishing praise on the shopping centre.

Andrew Murphy, who previously ran the city's John Lewis department store in the 00s, said: "Union Square genuinely is one of the very, very best retail locations anywhere in the UK of its size and type."

The Press and Journal reports the toy store, in the former Clarks unit, will create a dozen permanent jobs plus six seasonal roles.

It comes as French sports and camping equipment retailer Decathlon prepares to close its Union Square store this Sunday, November 16.

After this week, the brand will not have any branches north of the Central Belt, where it has two in Glasgow, one in Edinburgh and another in Livingston.

And Indian street food restaurant Singh Street has also quietly left Union Square.

Despite no formal announcement having been made, the shopping centre unit appears to have been vacated and staff at the Edinburgh branch confirmed to the P&J that the Aberdeen restaurant would not be reopening.
