The UK's maritime trade group has said a managed energy transition is "essential" to retain the industry's capacity and employment in the North-east.

The Society of Maritime Industries (SMI) issued a stark wakeup call to ministers in the wake of Labour's Invest 2035 industrial strategy.

The Herald reports the trade group, which supports more than 1.1million jobs across the UK, warned the decline of the oil and gas and shipbuilding industries in Scotland will continue unless there is an improved attempt to "buy British".

SMI said decarbonisation, maturing fields and investors turning away from fossil fuels had left the oil and gas industry in Scotland entering a "structural decline", emphasising the importance of wind farm developments buying British.

The trade group said the transition will have a "profound impact on Aberdeen and surrounding areas", affecting supply chains, services and skilled employment.

It added: "While the energy sector is pivoting towards  renewables, a managed transition plan is essential to retain industrial capacity and employment. It is essential for ports like Aberdeen to win renewables work with UK windfarms, if the UK wants to maintain its sovereign capabilities in these crucial sectors."
