Donald Trump has said the US will provide Ukraine with a "very good security guarantee" following positive and productive talks with President Zelensky.
The terms of a potential peace deal were the subject of intense debate behind closed doors on Monday evening as the Ukraine and US presidents were joined by seven European leaders including Sir Keir Starmer at the White House.
Trump reportedly paused the meeting at one point to brief Putin and discuss the next steps towards peace.
The Times reports a Kremlin aide said the call between the Russian and US presidents lasted around 40 minutes and was "frank and very constructive".
And Trump later said planning is already underway for a meeting attended by both Putin and Zelensky.
Posting on his social media platform Truth, he said: “After that meeting takes place, we will have a trilat, which would be the two presidents, plus myself. Again, this was a very good, early step for a war that has been going on for almost four years."
