Hailing from Turriff, North-east racing driver Gordon ‘Gordie’ Mutch is celebrating an exceptional 2026 season, securing the Finecut Radical SR3 XXR UK Championship with Team Derby Motorsport before claiming Vice World Champion honours at the Radical World Finals.
Competing at the renowned Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, home of the Formula 1 Spanish Grand Prix, Gordie won the opening race of the final European Championship round before delivering another standout performance in his very first outing at the World Finals, recording the fastest lap and a new lap record.
His success reflects a career built on determination, technical precision and an unwavering passion for motorsport.
A winning career
Gordie, from Turriff began racing at just seven years old in karting, at Boyndie winning the Club and Scottish Cadet Championship before securing consecutive National Karting Federation (NKF) Championships in 2015 and 2016, alongside the prestigious Super One Series title.
Moving into cars in 2017, he continued his winning form. In 2022, partnering with motorsport content creator Jimmy Broadbent, Gordie dominated the inaugural Praga Cup UK, claiming the championship with six race victories.
He later progressed into GT4 racing with Mahiki Racing, driving a Lotus Emira GT4 alongside Ian Duggan in the Pro-Am category. A career highlight came in 2024 with an outright category victory at the Silverstone 500, setting a new GT4 lap record. Further lap records followed at Spa-Francorchamps and Brands Hatch.
Racing success with a greater purpose
In 2025, Gordie joined Team Derby Motorsport, an innovative, student-led engineering programme at the University of Derby, competing in the Radical SR1 prototype series. His remarkable season delivered 12 race wins, 12 fastest laps and five of the six available lap records.
Returning in 2026 in the more powerful Radical SR3 XXR, he secured the championship at Donington Park before adding his international Vice World Champion title.
Yet, while Gordie is proud of his racing achievements, his work with Team Derby Motorsport has been particularly rewarding.
“The two seasons with Team Derby Motorsport, working with the students and tutors to help them gain knowledge through real racing experience, have been the most challenging, informative, humbling and rewarding experiences I have ever had the privilege to be involved in.”
For Gordie, success is about more than winning trophies.
“Success is not only about winning, but also about passing on what I have learned to some of the most remarkable, talented young people who share the same passion for motorsport. To see them progress and secure real jobs with race teams is hugely satisfying.”
His involvement highlights the value of collaboration between professional motorsport and education, giving students practical experience and skills that can help launch careers in engineering and the wider racing industry.
Looking ahead
With another championship secured and Vice World Champion honours added to his achievements, he is already looking forward to working with Team Derby Motorsport again in 2027.
For Gordie Mutch, true success is measured not only by what he achieves on the track, but also by the opportunities he helps create for the next generation.
