Inverurie-based kitchen, bathroom and bedroom specialist Laings is celebrating a remarkable workforce milestone as two long-serving employees – and brothers – reach a combined 90 years of service with the company.

Terry Charles and Garry Bremner have dedicated almost their entire working lives to Laings, achieving 50 and 40 years of service respectively. Their achievement reflects the loyalty, skills and commitment that have helped the family business continue to thrive for more than 160 years.

Five Decades of Industry Change

Terry joined Laings in 1976 as a 17-year-old plumbing apprentice after initially training as a welder. Following qualification from Aberdeen Technical College in 1980, he progressed through the business and later managed the company’s Alford branch after the acquisition of plumbing firm Comforts.

During his time in Alford, Terry worked on a range of prestigious projects, including historic properties and castles such as Craigievar, as well as numerous National Trust for Scotland sites.

Following Laings’ strategic move into bathroom retailing in the 1990s, Terry retrained as a bathroom designer and embraced a new era of technology.

“When we first started designing bathrooms, everything was done by hand,” said Terry. “We used pencils, drawing boards and stencils to create scale plans. Today, customers can walk through their future bathroom using virtual reality technology. The changes have been incredible to witness.”

Now serving as Senior Technical Designer and Supervisor, Terry plays a key role in surveying, pricing, installation management and mentoring newer members of the team.

“We’ve built a fantastic bathroom retail team and everyone works exceptionally well together,” he added. “I’m still enjoying my work every day.”

Following in His Brother’s Footsteps

Garry joined Laings as an apprentice plumber in 1986, following Terry into the business.

His early years included balancing work with a morning milk round before progressing into specialist bathroom installation. Garry became one of a select group of professionals in the UK qualified to design and assemble whirlpool baths when the technology was first introduced to the market.

His career later evolved into logistics and distribution, where he found a passion for driving and customer service. Today, he serves as a driver and storeman, delivering products and supporting customers across the region.

“I enjoy being out on the road, meeting people and visiting different places every day,” said Garry. “No two days are the same, and it’s been great to see how both the industry and the vehicles have evolved over the years.”

A Milestone Worth Celebrating

Laings Managing Director Darren Walker praised the brothers’ dedication and contribution to the business.

“Terry and Garry’s combined 90 years of service is an exceptional achievement and a proud milestone for both their family and our company,” he said.

“Their loyalty, expertise, hard work and commitment have helped shape Laings over many decades. They have made a lasting impact on our business, our customers and their colleagues, and we are incredibly grateful for everything they have contributed.

“On behalf of everyone at Laings, I would like to congratulate both Terry and Garry on these outstanding achievements.”

The brothers' combined 90 years of service demonstrates the opportunities available within long-established local businesses and highlights the value of investing in apprenticeships, skills development and employee progression.

As Laings continues to invest in its future, the company remains committed to supporting the next generation of skilled professionals while celebrating the dedication of employees whose commitment has helped build the business's reputation across the north-east.
