Uber is preparing to introduce self-driving cars to British streets as early as next year, with trials set to take place in London.

The US private hire car giant has signed a deal with AI firm Wayve to pilot its technology in Britain from spring next year.

It comes, The Telegraph reports, after transport secretary Heidi Alexander brought forward legislation allowing driverless vehicles on streets in Britain from 2026.

Until now, self-driving cars in the UK have been forced to operate under strict rules with a driver behind the wheel at all times while on public roads.

Uber's trials will see self-driving cars tested without another behind the wheel.

If successful, the vehicles could be rolled out more widely from summer 2027.
