University shortlisted for impact award

The University of Aberdeen has been shortlisted for a prestigious award in recognition of its impact on society, in this year's Times Higher Education (THE) Awards.

Each year, THE carries out a detailed analysis of the data it uses to compile its global rankings, and uses this information to compile a shortlist of UK institutions who have excelled in a specific area.

This year’s focus on social and economic impact - in particular, success in meeting the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals - sees the University among six shortlisted for this year’s THE DataPoints Merit Award.

The final winner will be announced at the THE Awards in London on Thursday, November 28.

Professor Karl Leydecker, senior vice-principal of the University of Aberdeen, said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for the THE DataPoints Merit Award in recognition of our positive contribution towards the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

“This nomination builds upon our success in this year’s Times Higher Education University Impact Rankings, which placed the University as 31st in the world in terms of the positive impact it has on society, and fifth in the world for responsible consumption and production.

“Each institution’s overall ranking was based on the mandatory goal of ‘revitalising global partnerships’, plus each university’s best three Sustainable Development Goals, which in the University’s case were Responsible Consumption and Production, Good Health and Wellbeing, and Gender Equality.

“We are delighted that our efforts in these areas – and our contribution to the sustainable development agenda overall – continues to be recognised, and we are committed to building on all that we have achieved though the development of the University strategy, which places sustainability and societal impact at its heart.”
