A four-week ceasefire in the Gulf has seemingly come to an end with the US and Iran reportedly exchanging fire as President Donald Trump made efforts to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran claimed to have fired missiles at American warships, which the US has denied, as well as at the UAE.

The Times reports Trump claimed US forces destroyed seven small boats during "Project Freedom" to escort neutral vessels through the strait.

Despite the resumption of hostilities, there has been no formal announcement that the ceasefire is over, and Trump has indicated diplomatic channels for peace talks remain open.

Both sides have made claims and counterclaims about the attacks.

Trump had claimed "Project Freedom" was a "humanitarian gesture" to enable stranded vessels to pass through the strait safely.

He added that "interference" would "be dealt with forcefully", while Iran vowed to enforce its control of the strait "with all our might".
