HMRC using AI to scour suspected tax cheats' social media

HMRC has confirmed it uses artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor social media posts as part of criminal investigations into suspected tax cheats.

It said the tech would not replace "human decision-making" and was subject to legal oversight.

"Greater use of AI will enable our staff to spend less time on admin and more time helping taxpayers, as well as better target fraud and evasion to bring in more money for public services," it said in a statement.

Nicola Sturgeon’s memoir spotted on sale in Aberdeen – two days ahead of release

Nicola Sturgeon’s much-talked-about new memoir, Frankly, has been spotted for sale in Aberdeen – two days before it is officially released.

The hotly anticipated book about the former first minister – who served in the role from 2014-23 – is due to be launched on August 14.

However, people can now pick up a copy at Waterstones in the city’s Bon Accord centre.

Perplexity AI makes $34.5bn offer for Google Chrome browser

Perplexity, an artificial intelligence start-up, is reported to have made an unsolicited offer to buy Google’s Chrome browser for $34.5billion.

The bid revealed on Tuesday is unusual because it is almost double Perplexity’s own valuation, which is estimated to be $18billion, according to The Wall Street Journal.

The company said that it had secured investors, including some large venture capital funds, to back the deal in full.

UK jobs market cools as vacancies fall

The UK jobs market has continued to cool as vacancies fell and the number of people on payrolls dropped, the latest official figures suggest.

Job openings fell by 5.8% to 718,000 between May to July across nearly all industries, according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

It said there was evidence that some firms may not be recruiting new workers or replacing people who have left.
