A recent community-focused activity in Montrose highlighted an important reminder for businesses across Aberdeen, Grampian and beyond.

During a routine day inside a local supermarket, a light-hearted engagement created a noticeable shift in atmosphere. Customers interacted more positively, staff engagement increased, and a standard operational environment became more connected.

This marked a first for the “Miles of Smiles” initiative — an ongoing 82-week fundraising campaign supporting mental health and cancer charities across Scotland — bringing the engagement into a live retail environment.

The activity saw Marius Coste, Facilities Management Leader for Elior at Work, alongside three members of his team, take part in-store dressed as a Minion in Tesco Montrose, helping to raise awareness and encourage donations for the campaign’s supported causes.

The collaborative approach demonstrated how team engagement can positively influence both workplace culture and customer experience.

Business insight

This moment reinforces a key principle:

People drive performance.

In fast-paced environments, focus often sits on delivery and efficiency. However, small, human interactions can:

  • enhance customer experience
  • improve employee morale
  • strengthen team cohesion

Leadership reflection

For organisations across the region, the takeaway is clear:

  • Culture is shaped through everyday actions
  • Engagement does not require large-scale initiatives
  • Leadership is demonstrated through presence and participation

Cross-functional collaboration remains a key driver of positive and resilient workplaces.

Community impact

The wider initiative continues to support:

  • Scottish Association for Mental Health (SAMH)
  • CLAN Cancer Support

Progress to date:

  • 2,770 km completed
  • £3,017 raised (+£7,000 previously for SAMH)
