Aberdeen University Students’ Association (the students’ union) has hailed this year’s January Welcome Week Fayre at the Butchart Centre as a major success, with hundreds of students attending to explore the opportunities available to make the most of their time at the University of Aberdeen.

The event brought together a wide range of student-led stalls representing over 200 societies, sports clubs and student groups, alongside local charities and community partners. It offered students a welcoming, engaging and practical introduction to campus life and the wider Aberdeen community.

From sports and wellbeing to volunteering, fundraising and creativity, students were able to explore the breadth of Union-supported activities on offer. Groups in attendance ranged from Lacrosse and Underwater Hockey to the Rock and Metal Society, Raising and Giving (RAG), Erasmus Student Network, Student Show, Business and Entrepreneurship, and the Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Forum.

Hannah Cowie, Vice President for Activities at Aberdeen University Students’ Union, said: “Welcome Week is all about helping students feel connected to each other, to the Union, and to life in Aberdeen. Seeing so many students engaging with clubs, societies and community groups shows just how important these opportunities are for belonging, wellbeing and making the most of the student experience.”

She added: “Whether students are brand new to Aberdeen or returning for a new term, events like this help them find their people, try something new, and feel confident getting involved.”

The Students’ Union says the success of the Fayre reflects the vital role student activities play not only in enhancing the student experience, but also in supporting Aberdeen’s wider future economically, culturally and socially.

Fiona Heinonen, CEO of Aberdeen University Students’ Union, said: “Aberdeen University students bring huge economic, educational and cultural value to our city. The Students’ Union exists to support students throughout their academic journey from representation and democracy to wellbeing and welfare support, as well as sport, societies, leisure and community-building.”

She continued: “That work plays a bigger role than many people realise. A strong Students’ Union helps students thrive during their studies, feel supported, connected and proud to call Aberdeen home. This is a key part of encouraging young people to study here and inspiring graduates to stay in the North East, build their lives and careers locally, and contribute to future economic growth across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire.”

The Students’ Union believes that helping students feel connected to each other, the University and the local community strengthens the talent pipeline the region depends on, benefiting local employers, public services, the third sector and the wider economy.

“Supporting the Students’ Union is one practical way organisations and individuals can help strengthen that pipeline of talent,” Fiona added. “By helping students flourish during their studies, we can help Aberdeen and the wider region flourish economically and socially for years to come.”

Aberdeen University Students’ Union is a registered charity and is encouraging ongoing support from students, businesses, community partners and stakeholders to continue delivering essential services including democratic representation, advocacy, welfare and wellbeing support, sport and societies, and opportunities that place students at the heart of Aberdeen life.
