An announcement on the new administration to lead Aberdeen City Council could come as early as today after a whirlwind of power talks last night.

The SNP emerged from Thursday's local election as the city's biggest party with 20 seats, three short of a majority.

A partnership with the Liberal Democrats, who won four seats in the city, would take them over the line - and last night the Lib Dem group leader Ian Yuill told the Press & Journal that he had spoken with the SNP.

However, he said that he also had plans to speak to both Labour and the Conservatives.

“We want to implement as much of our Liberal Democrat manifesto for Aberdeen as we can," he told the P&J's Alistair Gossip.

“Councillors should work together across the council. I can confirm we have had contact with two other political groups on the council, and I expect to speak to the other tonight. We want the council to deliver for all citizens and think all members should work to achieve that.”

In Aberdeenshire, the Conservatives were returned as the largest party, with Councillor Mark Findlater installed is party leader and likely leader of the council.
