Senior students from St Margaret’s School for Girls are preparing to take centre stage at Aberdeen Arts Centre this week in a powerful all-female production of Les Misérables.
With vocal cords warmed and rehearsals in full swing, excitement is building as the students are challenging tradition by taking on every role - from Jean Valjean to Javert - to bring this iconic musical to life, proving that no part is off-limits for girls on stage.
As Les Misérables marks its 40th anniversary since its London premier in October 1985, this year’s senior school production reimagines the timeless classic with a fresh approach.
Featuring more than 80 students on stage, in the band and behind the scenes, the production is a testament to the school’s commitment to cultivating a dynamic creative arts programme, championing collaboration across departments that celebrate every form of talent and expression.
Drama and music are integral to school life at St Margaret’s, where pupils are encouraged to build confidence, find their voice and explore their creativity.

Kirsty McGovern, Head of Drama at St Margaret’s School for Girls, said: “This production is a celebration of what young women can achieve when given the space to lead and create. By taking on roles traditionally reserved for male actors, they prove they can command the stage, shape the story, and embrace their creativity - a powerful lesson they’ll carry beyond the stage.”

Senior student, Sarah Reynolds, said: “It is an honour to have the opportunity to play the role of Jean Valjean in Les Misérables, especially during the 40 year anniversary of the show. This role is unlike anything I’ve ever taken on before. It has been a challenge because of Jean Valjean’s complex character and how hard his life's journey has been but an ultimately rewarding experience too as the character is a symbol of hope and how love and forgiveness can change people for the better.”
Evening performances of the production will be held on Thursday 6th and Friday 7th November at 7pm, with a matinee performance on Saturday 8th November at 2pm.
