Located near Bend, OR at the western flank of the Newberry volcano, this is the first enhanced geothermal system to date that has reached over 300C.
The 12.25” drill bit (code name Chewie) was designed specifically for this application and the team were thrilled to be a part of such a monumental step in providing much-needed power to the world!
During the technical demonstration, Mazama achieved:
- Record-breaking bit runs up to 2,760 feet
- Peak penetration rates of 100 feet/hour and an average of 76 feet/hour across diverse rock formations including granite, basalt, and granodiorite
- Zero downhole failures of motors or measurement tools
- Confirmed well integrity and cement stability at ultra-high temperatures.
And the Chewie played its part in achieving those results!
