The 'worst is yet to come' as floods are expected across the North-east today with warnings of "exceptional rainfall" leading to evacuations and road closures.

Marykirk is under a severe "danger to life" flood warning from the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA), while Inverurie, Kemnay and Kintore are also under warnings.

Rest centres have been opened across the region, though nobody has been evacuated from their homes yet.

Traffic Scotland has closed the A90 between Stonehaven and Dundee due to flood warnings put in place from SEPA.

Stay at home

A number of warnings remain in place from various governing bodies asking people, especially those living under red weather warnings, to not travel.

Following a meeting of the Scottish government's emergency committee, Shona Robison, Scotland's deputy first minister, said: "the worst impacts are yet to come.

"Protecting the public is our immediate priority, and we are co-ordinating a national effort to ensure that people are safe," she said.

"The red warning has been expanded to cover further parts of Scotland and we expect weather conditions to deteriorate seriously overnight.

"Our message is clear - if you live in the areas covered by the red warning, please stay at home and do not travel, unless advised to relocate to a rest centre."

It comes after the body of a 57-year-old woman was recovered from the river angus, before the red warning was even in place.

She was found in the Water of Lee, near Glen Esk, at 4PM.

A police spokesperson said there were no suspicious circumstances after they were first alerted at 1.45PM.

More travel disruption

Public transport remains limited in the region.

Aberdeen station is closed with no services running in or out of the city throughout Friday and a number of bus services have been cancelled.

Ms Robison warned: "If you need to travel in a yellow warning area then make sure you can travel safely and that roads and services are not impacted.

"We are working with partners across the country, including emergency services, the voluntary sector and energy companies, to make sure that we mitigate disruption as much as possible.

"However, we are clear that there will be considerable disruption and we expect to launch a major clean-up operation as we move into the weekend."

Angus Council also confirmed the closure of the A90 to Dundee to Stonehaven, saying: £Due to updated severe flood warning guidance from SEPA, Traffic Scotland has agreed with Police Scotland to close the A90 between Struan’s Garage (Dundee) to Stonehaven (AWPR/A90/A92 Junction).

"Access for emergency vehicles and residents will remain northbound up to the A94 Forfar junction and southbound up to the Brechin South junction."

The official diversion route is via the A9 and A95, but it is about 150 miles long.
