Angela Rayner has been accused of dodging £40,000 in stamp duty on her new seaside flat after she told authorities it was her primary residence.

The deputy prime minister is understood to have removed her name from the deeds of her house in Greater Manchester a few weeks before buying an £800,000 seaside flat in Hove, East Sussex.

According to The Telegraph, the MP would have had to pay £70,000 in stamp duty on a second property, so the change saved her £40,000. She is thought to have paid only £30,000.

She told Tameside council in Manchester that her constituency house remains her primary residence and informed Brighton and Hove council that her flat was a second home, changing her status.

Despite not breaking any law in declaring her new apartment to be her primary residence, questions have been raised over whether she did so to pay less stamp duty and council tax.
