A world record-breaking long-distance Scottish cyclist will inspire future athletes at a unique event in Aberdeen today.
Mark Beaumont, who recently circumnavigated the globe in 79 days, setting a new world record, will be speaking for 80 minutes at Aberdeen Sports Village (ASV) on 7th November, inspiring local athletes and coaches by sharing his secrets to completing ultra endurance challenges. Mark is also the Corporate Ambassador for mid-market private equity firm LDC, an active business investor in Aberdeen.
In July, Mr Beaumont completed the Artemis World Cycle challenge which saw him cycle 18,000 miles around the world, one day ahead than his 80 day target. During the endurance, the legendary cyclist experienced three serious falls and sub-zero temperatures as well as forest fire smog. His feat beat the previous world record of 123 days.
Mr Beaumont, who cycled across Scotland before the age of 12, will explain with the ASV audience how he maintained his mental and physical strength whilst crossing 16 countries and cycling a punishing 16 hours every day.
The event is aimed at inspiring athletes, including ASV’s high performance diving and swimming squads, and coaches and clubs from sports teams across the area.
Duncan Sinclair, CEO ASV, said: “We are delighted to welcome Mark back to ASV, and we are particularly excited to hear all about his most recent, incredible round the world challenge. At ASV we are dedicated to developing world-class athletes, most recently with the University of Aberdeen Performance swimming team, and our new high performance diving programme.
“Being the best takes dedication as well as physical and mental stamina, and we are all looking forward to learning from Mark’s awe-inspiring achievements.
“We have a wealth of talent in Aberdeen and this is a great opportunity for our athletes and their coaches to learn from the best in sport.”
Mark Beaumont added: “It is great to be back in Aberdeen and I hope my experiences can help encourage athletes of the future. The Around the World in 80 day cycle was, undoubtedly the most punishing challenge I have ever put myself through. Each stage brought different climates and changing terrains, and I hope some of my experiences will inspire the next generation of endurance sportsmen and women.”
