BBC Scotland is facing “severe cuts” and potential redundancies as the broadcaster seeks to save £500million across the UK over the next three years.
News staff at Pacific Quay in Glasgow were told this week that cuts were imminent, with The Times reporting that as many as 60 jobs could be lost.
An insider told the newspaper: “People were ashen-faced. Only a handful of the most high-profile presenters will feel that their jobs are safe. The mood was ugly and there was talk of strike action.”
BBC Scotland said it was making “proportionate savings across all departments” and was working with unions to avoid compulsory redundancies.
Nick McGowan-Lowe, Scotland organiser for the National Union of Journalists, said: “These are severe cuts at BBC Scotland, and they come at a time where there has never been a greater need for quality public service broadcasting.
"This constant cycle of cuts and cost-saving undermines the BBC’s core mission to inform, educate, and entertain — and it must end.”
The cuts form part of plans to remove 550 roles across the BBC, with the future of the BBC Scotland television channel also reportedly under scrutiny.
