5K challenge launched in aid of local charity

Local children’s charity Befriend a Child has teamed up with Banchory based personal trainer Seonaid Drummond Fitness to deliver the charity’s first fully digital fitness fundraising challenge.

‘We were looking for a way to engage our supporters across the Aberdeen City, Aberdeenshire and beyond and with so many outdoor fitness events and challenges having been cancelled we saw it as an opportunity to try something a bit different and raise funds for our children in the process. We are also aware that exercising at this time is important for our physical and mental health so want to do all we can to support and encourage this,’ – Hannah Adams, marketing and communications manager, Befriend a Child.

Befriend a Child’s 5K a day for the month of May challenge is accessible to all and encourages participants to run, jog, walk, cycle, skip or even dance 5K every day for the month of May all the while being coached and guided through the experience by fitness expert Seonaid.

‘I am thrilled to be part of the 5K a day challenge and can’t wait to get started. I’ll be there to offer the participants motivational support, to encourage and help people push past their own doubts about whether or not they can achieve their challenge.’ – Seonaid Alsop of Seonaid Drummond Fitness.

Participants can complete their 5K a day individually as a personal challenge, families can take part together and use it as an opportunity to spend time outdoors or explore their local area, and friends or colleagues can complete as a team, turning the challenge into a competition.

‘This is not your average 5K challenge, it’s so much more and it’s all for a fantastic local cause supporting children across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire. We can’t wait to see what everyone’s been up to,’ – Hannah Adams, Befriend a Child Marketing and communications manager.

The event costs only £5 to enter with individuals being asked to try and raise £50 in sponsorship.

As part of the fee, participants will gain access to a closed Facebook 5K a day community where they can talk to one another on their progress, post photos and access a multitude of resources to help them achieve their goal of 5K every day for 31 days. There will be downloadable diaries and calendars as well as recipes to keep participants properly fuelled, live workout videos with Seonaid, and fitness tips and advice which are set to really add value to the experience, and at the end participants will receive a 5K a day certificate from the charity.

‘It is such a challenging time for many across Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire, particularly for those most vulnerable in our communities. The support Befriend a Child offers is needed now more than ever and is invaluable to the mental health and wellbeing of our children and their families. We can not thank our supporters enough for their generosity in ensuring we can continue to turn frowns upside down at this time’ – Sarah Misra, Befriend a Child chief executive.

The challenge has already attracted over 200 interested participants and even more are set to sign up to take on the 5K a day challenge by Friday, May 1.
