The team behind the North of Scotland Breast Screening Programme, based at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, are aiming to walk, run, cycle or swim almost 600 miles before the week is out in a bid to spread the word during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

NHS Grampian staff within breast services are carrying out the challenge during their breaks and spare time, racking up an impressive 110 miles on Monday alone.

Superintendent Radiographer Michelle Cumming explained: “We’ve set a target of reaching at least 596 miles together as that’s the approximate circumference of the area we cover, from Aberdeen all the way up to Shetland.

“Breast screening saves around 130 lives every year in Scotland and you’re five times more likely to survive breast cancer if it’s caught in its earliest stage. Screening is important as it can find breast cancer before symptoms are noticeable.

“We’d love if members of the public want to join in our challenge too as it’s so important to do all we can to raise awareness of breast cancer, the crucial role screening plays and the wonderful charities supporting our patients and our amazing NHS.”

The team will also be holding a bake sale and are determined to spread the word throughout the month of October and beyond.
